In Special Forces and professional sport, I watched the same pattern repeat.Those that lasted weren't the most disciplined, or the ones that incrementally improved. They were the ones that never lost their foundations.Sleep. Then health. Then the people closest to them. When these deteriorated, the performance they were protecting was the final thing to go.The same pattern runs through the partners, founders, and CEOs I work with now. Their skills, judgement, and mindset are already built - they wouldn't be where they are otherwise. The only real question is how long they can sustain it.For most at the top, sustaining it carries a cost. My background is in environments where performance had to hold under extremely challenging conditions. For decades.I co-created and led the human performance programme for UK Special Forces. Operators faced sustained cognitive load, chronic sleep disruption, high-stakes decisions, and constant travel. The same conditions executives live every week. The programme was adopted across the wider group and is still in use today.I also helped build the equivalent in professional New Zealand rugby. Three games in ten days, weekly flights, long stretches away from family. Working with the performance department, we raised player availability by 60% on previous years.The same physiological principles apply to the partner whose week runs Frankfurt-Dubai-Singapore, the founder running a Series C across three time zones, and the CEO whose board cycle never pauses.Most performance advice is built around mindset and routine.
